The hospital is located 13 to 15 metres below Buda Castle along 2km of a cave system. The hospital, which was strengthened with reinforced concrete during World War II, provided care to more than 600 wounded during the war - although it was only designed to accommodate 200. During the Cold War, it was again strengthened in order to function as a nuclear shelter, with an entrance that was concealed from prying eyes. The hospital was empty apart from a married couple living in a specially-created apartment within, whose job it was to ventilate the area, maintain the equipment and remake the beds with fresh linen every two weeks.

Now, on Museum Night, the institution has awoken from its 60-year slumber. The cave system can be reached via a narrow staircase off Szentharomsag ter, from where a corridor leads to the hospital. The installation below evokes the atmosphere of the time to spine-chilling effect. There is an evocation of Christmas 1944, an operating theatre that is more reminiscent of a torture changer, there are wax models that stare back at you with tortured expressions and piles of bloodied clothes - and everywhere a 15 degree chill. The cliff-face hospital is not recommended for claustrophobes, nor for those of a nervous disposition.
